New Orleans Passes "Ban the Box" Ordinance for City Contractor Employment Applications

Starting in March 2019, contractors doing work for the city of New Orleans will no longer be permitted to ask applicants about their criminal histories on job applications.

The measure expands an existing City Hall policy to cover individuals who want to work for employers with city contracts, cooperative endeavor grants or grant funding.

In 2014, New Orleans approved a different "Ban the Box" policy that removed criminal history inquiries from job applications for city departments.

The new "Ban the Box" ordinance will not affect private businesses that do not perform work for the city.
